What’s one thing people in the corporate world desperatly need? Apart from the usual work ethics, a professional headshot is added to the list. Maybe you’re tired of that old picture on your LinkedIn profile, company bio, acting portofolio, or that blurry vacation photo from five years ago. Unfortunatly, you don’t have a big budget or a studio setup. Well, the good news is you actually don’t need either of them. With just a bit of knowlege and your phone or camera, you can take an amazing headshot right at home. In this guide, you’ll find out how to take professional headshots in 7 easy steps.

How Do You Take Professional Headshots?

There’s no hard and fast rule about how to take professional headshots. Regardless, if you want crack your mind less, here’s the way to go:

Choose the Right Location and Background

All you need is a quiet background that doesn’t try to steal the spotlite. It could be a blank wall, or even a curtin. If you’re lucky enough to have a plain wall near a window, that would be perfct. You also need to think about distance. Try to leave few feets between you and the background. This helps create a little visual seperation, which feels more natural and professional than being pressed right up against a wall. Once you’ve found a calm-looking spot to shoot, you can move to the next step, which is a very importent one.

    Set Up the Right Lighting

Lighting can seriously change evrything about your headshot. You can be dressed to impress, pose like a super model, but if the lighting is off, it’s game over. The easiest solution is to use natural light. To do this, simply stand facing the window, and let it do the work. If you want to soften it a bit more, hang up a sheer curtain or even a white bed sheet. Not kidding, it works wonder. Now, if you don’t have good window light, you can always use a ring light or desk lamp. Just keep it at eye level, or slightly above, and aim for even lighting on your face. Avoid placing the light directly overhed as it creates shadows under your eyes and nose, making you look like you haven’t slept in a week. Once your lighting is all set, it’s time to grab your gear.

Choose the Right Camera or Phone

Here’s the part most people over think. You do not need a professional camera to take a professional-looking headshot. Your phone is more than good enough, especially if it has portrait mode. If you’re using your smartphone, wipe the lens clean. Seriously, you’d be surprized at the differnce that makes. Then, turn on portrait mode, and tap to focus on your face. That slight blur in the background is the magic touch. On the other hand, if you do have a camera and a tripod, use a lens between 50mm and 85mm and set the aperture around f/2.8 to f/5.6. Don’t worry if that sounds too technical; your phone still got your back. Now, you’ve got the location, the lighting, and the camera set. It’s time to decide what to wear.

    Dress Like You Mean Business

What you wear really set the tone of your headshot. The trick is to keep it simple and make sure it reflect your vibe or your industry. If you’re going for a business look, a blazer or a button-up shirt always works. For creatives, a well-fitted top in a solid color is just fine. Furthermore, try your best to avoid loud patterns, neon colors, and logos. They can be distractive and pull focus away from your face. And you definitly don’t want that. Choose colors that flatter your skin tone and contrast gently with your background. If your wall is light, wear something darker. If the wall is dark, go lighter. Alright, now you’re looking great. But how do you stand? Where do you look? Let’s get into that next.

Pose Without Feeling Like a Robot

Posing for a headshot always feels wierd at first. However, the trick is to stay relaxed and confident. Then, angle your body slightly away from the camera while turning your head back toward it. This gives the image a little more life than just facing dead-on. Additionally, you can lower your chin just a touch, not too much, to avoid a double chin effect. Look slightly above the camera lens for a natural feel. And don’t forget the smile. A soft smile can make you look more approachable and confident. Most importantly, don’t hold your breath. A deep breath helps you relax, and when you’re relaxed, your eyes show it.

Take Multiple Shots with Different Expressions

Here’s the secret no one tells you. The first few photos almost always feel and look akward. That’s completely normal. So, keep going. The more you shoot, the more relaxed you’ll get, and the better your photos will be. Also, try different angles while taking the photos. You can tilt your head slightly left or right, try different smiles, shift your shoulders just a bit, and take another. Sometimes the tiniest change makes the biggest diffrence.
Take at least 30 to 50 photos. We know that sounds like a lot, but trust us, you’ll be glad to have options. And when you’re picking the final photo, show a few to a friend.

Edit Your Headshots for a Polished Look

Now that you’ve got your best shots, you can give them a small polish. Not a full make over, just a gentle touch-up. You also need to fix any strange lighting, maybe smooth out a blemish or two, but don’t go wild. Over-editing can make you look fake, and that kinda defeats the purpose. Once you’re happy with your edits, crop your photo for its purpose. Use an 8×10 ratio for acting headshots, or a square crop for social media profiles. Save it in high resolution so it looks sharp everywhere. If you can’t edit the pictures on your phone, then allow an AI to help you.

Bonus – Use an AI Headshot Generator for Instant Professional Photos

Not everyone has the time or patience to set up lighting, pose, and sort through multiple photos. If that sounds like you, Headshot Photo, AI Headshot Generator can do most of the work for you.
