Running a small business can give you the migraine of a lifetime! It’s a hard thing to do, no matter how passionate you are about the job. After all, there’s a ton of paperwork to get through, a million people to get back to, and only 24 hours to get everything done. All in all, by the time the end of the month rolls around, you feel like you’re all over the place.

But the end of the month is quite a crucial time in the business world. Not only is it a time when you look back over the previous 30 days and see if it all adds up, but it’s also the time where you can prepare for the next month ahead. And the more you do this, the easier your time of being a business owner will become!

As such, here are the kind of things a small business should focus on by the 30th or 31st.

    Match Accounts to the Books

When you take a quick look through to see if all your receipts, invoices, and transactions match up in both places, you do yourself a massive favor.

Namely, you double check that the records you keep are accurate and up to date, and that you’re not missing a chunk of change from your bank account.

You also give yourself the chance to chase any late payments before they’re more than overdue, and that can be a business saver!

    Pay Their Staff

The end of the month is the classic period in which ‘pay day’ falls. In most places, this occurs in the third or fourth week of the month, usually on a Thursday or Friday. Your business has probably adopted the same schedule – or at least, you’re aiming to.

For the time being, staff pay days are a little unknown to everyone, and happen as and when you’re able to. If you want to build a team that puts in 110%, however, you’re going to need to streamline payroll efforts and actually pick a date and pay on it, time and time again.

To make this easier, we recommend using payroll software designed for a small business, where payments can be automated, double checked, and the records of each wage slip is kept somewhere you can easily find them.

    Adjust the Budget

Every business needs to be working with one. And when it’s the end of the month, you should be going over your budget as it stands and seeing where you’ve still got cash leftover.

If there’s a pot that still has money in it, it might be a sign your budget allocation is a bit off. But that’s OK, because this is your chance to check for minor errors like these before they become overblown problems you never saw coming.

When the month comes to a close, double check areas like these. They’re the most important admin work to get done, and you’ll thank yourself for checking later on!
